Geographers examine the cultures, economies, societies, physical landscapes, and environments of the Earth using a unique combination of the humanities, social and natural sciences. We view the Earth, its inhabitants, and the processes that form and transform the world we live in using a spatial perspective. This particularly geographical way of looking at the world allows for an inter-disciplinary exploration of processes operating in specific places. As a student of geography, you will learn to view the world using this geographical lens. Geographers examine geographical processes in a variety of thematic areas within geography including landscape, heritage, migration, culture, food, tourism, environment, economy, cities, climate, geomorphology, and development.

BSc (Hons) Geoscience

Geoscience at UCC centres on the study of the history of the Earth, its chemical and physical composition, its structure and evolution. The course allows the following of one of three themes in third and fourth year, these are geoscience, environmental geoscience, and palaeobiology. The core of the course investigates the functioning, development, and use of Earth’s physical environment and involves the study of its crust and interior, its atmosphere and oceans, its surface processes, paleo-climatic and environmental changes and the fossil record. It also involves the study of Earth's natural and physical resources and incorporates interdisciplinary subjects across the traditional disciplines of geology, geography, geophysics, geochemistry, oceanography, and biological sciences.

Most of our students have no Italian before joining us. Italian is a small, accessible department. Learning takes place in small groups, allowing you to reach a high level of linguistic proficiency and to develop important critical and analytical skills. You can choose from a range of modules on literature and art, film and music, politics and the media. Various pathways through the BA provide the opportunity to spend Year 3 studying at one of our partner universities in Italy, an experience that our students often describe as the best of their lives. Students in all years of the course take an intensive Italian language course, taught in small tutorial groups. Free access is provided to an online Computer-Assisted Language-Learning (CALL) tool.

HDip Languages - Advanced Languages and Global Communication

This course is aimed at people hoping to return to the job market with modern language and intercultural communication skills along with competencies relating to managing global relationships, ICT, translation and localisation skills. It offers advanced specialism in one language (from Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian and French) and 10 credits of an additional foreign language from the same range. The programme will equip students with the necessary language competence, as well as intercultural skills, to be able to do business with markets of particular strategic interest to Ireland, both in Europe and beyond. By the end of the course, students in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, German and French will have reached a minimum of CEFR level B1.

It can also provide a route into teaching mathematics at second-level. Sponsorship Information and how/where to apply is advertised on the HSE Website https://www.hse.ie/eng/staff/jobs/job-search/nursing/midwifery/ Candidates must apply for the sponsorship on-line with PAC (Postgraduate Application Centre) https://v2.pac.ie/institute/8 This is an 18-month programme for Registered General Nurses that leads to a Higher Diploma in Midwifery and registration as a Registered Midwife (RM) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). The programme is full time and is offered in partnership with Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH). Successful applicants will have EU Fees paid by the HSE subject to certain conditions. Students receive an 18-month contract of employment with CUMH and as an employee of the maternity services, must meet certain contractual obligations.
