The BCL (Etudes Juridiques) is a three year dual law degree offered to students in France by the Catholic University of Lyon Faculty of Law (UCLy) and Maynooth University Law Department (MU). At present, this degree programme is not open to applications by students in Ireland. Students enter the programme in UCLy. Application is competitive, and includes an interview to determine academic potential and proficiency in the English language. Students spend the first two years of study at UCLy, either at the campus in Lyon or the campus in Anncey. Students study modules in French law, as well as additional short courses in Irish law delivered by visiting academics from MU. Students spend the third year of study at MU, studying modules in Irish law, as well as additional short courses in French law delivered by visiting academics from UCLy. Over the duration of the programme, students will complete foundational modules in French and Irish law, as well as a range of optional subjects. Successful completion of the programme leads to the award of the License en Droit and the University Degree in Common Law by UCLy (DU Common Law formally awarded by Lyon 2 University) and the Batchelor of Civil Law by Maynooth University. The third year of the programme offers French students the opportunity to experience Irish student life and Irish culture. Students can participate in a range of student societies, can apply to undertake internships through the department, can volunteer for positions of leadership with the Maynooth Students Union, and much more.

BACHELOR OF LAWS (LLB)

Specialise in a single major law programme over four years, opening up excellent employment prospects in both law and non-law careers. Acquire a thorough grounding in the fundamental areas of legal study and a broad range of specialist modules like Transnational Litigation, Civil Liberties and Criminology. The LLB (MH501) is a four-year degree almost exclusively in law. It will be of particular interest if you wish to study law in depth and detail. MH501 provides you with a wider selection of law modules than MH502, the BCL, and is one year longer than the latter degree. This law degree is accredited by the Honorable Society of the King’s Inns. Students may apply to complete a work placement year in a law firm (subject to availability) or a year studying abroad at one of our international partner institutions (subject to availability). This is an innovative programme with a strong emphasis on the development of verbal and written advocacy skills through applied modules such as legal writing, negotiation and dispute resolution. BCL (LAW AND ARTS) (LWD)

This law degree is accredited by the Honorable Society of King’s Inns. The BCL is a three-year degree in law combined with one other subject. While the BCL covers all the core modules of law, you cover less law than on the LLB (MH501), giving you more time to develop expertise in another subject. The main advantage is that it allows you to combine the study of law with study of another discipline. Law is taken jointly with one Arts subject for the final two years of the programme. Students can choose from a wide range of Arts subjects including languages and other areas within the humanities and social sciences. Students receive an excellent grounding in core law subjects, while also retaining the flexibility to customise their own academic path. Flexibility and choice: BCL students who successfully complete the first year of the programme have the option of transferring into the second year of the LLB programme (MH501). Students may apply to complete a work placement year in a law firm (subject to availability) or a year studying abroad at one of our international partner institutions.

BCL (LAW AND CRIMINOLOGY) (LWC)

Maynooth University is one of the few Universities in Ireland to offer the option of studying law with criminology as part of an accredited law degree. Law is taken jointly with Criminology for the three years of the programme. The BCL is a three-year degree in law combined with one other subject. While the BCL covers all the core modules of law, you cover less law than on the LLB (MH501), giving you more time to develop expertise in another subject. The main advantage is that it allows you to combine the study of law with study of another discipline. Students acquire a thorough grounding in the fundamental areas of legal study: including foundational legal principles; legal systems; and the role of Irish, European, and international law. By studying Criminology, students examine the causes of crime and society’s reaction to criminality.. Unique interdisciplinary programme with perspectives from sociology, psychology and economics, as well as law. Leading international experts with research interests in prisons, the death penalty, human trafficking, counter-terrorism and mental health teach on this programme.

MA in English (Medieval and Renaissance Literature)

Our MA in English (Medieval and Renaissance Literature) offers students the opportunity to explore Old English, Middle English, and early modern literature in all its rich variety and contexts. The MA examines canonical and lesser-known texts, forms, and authors from the islands of Britain and Ireland, ranging from the earliest works in English, such as riddles, elegies, and wisdom poetry, to the proliferation of texts and genres in Middle English writing of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, including Chaucer, to the cheap print of the sixteenth century and the popular plays of Shakespeare. We take a particular interest in interrogating conventional boundaries between periods (including between Old and Middle English, and between medieval and Renaissance texts), between genres, and between media (from oral to written traditions, from page to stage, and from text to screen).
