This course will prepare you to teach at post-primary level in two languages. You will take Gaeilge, along with a choice of either French, German or Spanish. The MSocSc (Rights & Social Policy) provides advanced study in key and often challenging issues facingsocial policy today. It provides anopportunity for critical study in the application of social policy theory and methodology to policy and practice. The programme aims to provide students with advanced critical, analytical and research skills in selected substantive areas of social policy, and in the shaping of policy, in contemporary Ireland and more widely. In particular the emphasis is on the interconnections between the themes of rights, recognition and redistribution. Currently, the programme includes taught modules on governance, equality, ageing and criminal justice. The MSocSc (Rights & Social Policy) will provide graduates with: advanced knowledge in critical social policy theory, studies and perspectives; advanced skills in relation to social policy analysis; high levels of competence in social policy research methods; and a thorough grounded understanding in areas of rights, governance, equality, ageing and criminal justice issues. The MA in Applied Linguistics and Intercultural Studies is a one-year full time (or two-year part-time) taught programme and is offered on a full-time basis using a combination of faculty-student contact hours and self-directed learning and research. It aims to provide students who already have a background in a foreign language and linguistics at undergraduate level with an opportunity to specialise at a postgraduate level in the areas of sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, corpus linguistics, bi- and multilingualism, second language pedagogy and the role of English in a globalised world. What makes this programme unique in Ireland is two-fold: the inclusion of Intercultural Studies, allowing students to expand their linguistic specialisation to cognate (inter)cultural contexts such as intercultural competence and the interplay of language and culture; and the genuinely multilingual orientation of the programme focusing not only on English, but also other international languages like French, German and Spanish. The programme introduces students to academic research, new ideas and approaches. It aims to equip students with academic, analytical, creative and reflective skills in order to foster interest and involvement in research in the fields of applied linguistics and intercultural studies. The MA in Chinese Studies aims to provide students who already have a background in Chinese language and culture at undergraduate level with an opportunity to specialise in the area of cultural and literary analysis with particular emphasis on the conflict and communication within the Sinosphere (mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau) and between China and the West. This taught Master of Education programme is designed for those interested in the field of educational studies. Its flexible modular design offers the opportunity of completing a Master of Education Degree full-time, in one year, or part-time, over two or more years. It is a 90 credit degree with each module counting for 10 credits. In their final year students choose to complete either a thesis (thirty credits) or a capstone project (twenty credits). Modules are taught on weekday evenings. Some are offered as Easter and Summer School choices. Students can choose a specialism option or a general option. The specialisms on offer are Educational Leadership, Teacher Education, Early Childhood Teaching and Learning, and Social Justice Education. Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership and some other postgraduate courses are eligible for module exemptions. It is possible to study modules of particular interest without completing a Master of Education degree or to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Studies after completing 60 credits.

This is a one-year full-time taught postgraduate diploma (Aug ? June) which is designed to prepare qualified second-level teachers to provide and lead a school guidance counselling service. The programme is recognised by the Irish Department of Education (DES) and the Institute of Guidance Counsellors (IGC) as a professional, international qualification in Guidance Counselling. Participants attend Maynooth University one full day per week (Friday) and engage in school placement one day per week (Monday-Thursday) in a school other than where they work. The programme begins in late-August with full-day induction and workshops (attendance is mandatory). Intensive training in Psychometric Testing is scheduled for the October mid-term break (dates to be confirmed) and there will be 2/3 Saturday workshops in Semester 1 Programme participants are responsible for arranging the school placement component of the course (within a 160 km travel distance of Maynooth) during which they work in close co-operation with the School Guidance Counsellor.

The Professional Master of Education (PME) programme is designed to prepare high quality teachers for today’s second level schools. Students undertake a study of the principles of teaching and learning, develop practical teaching skills as well as the foundation disciplines of educational theory. They engage in a supervised teaching placement in at least two second-level schools. Students take modules in teaching methodologies for (usually) two curricular subjects. The course commences in late August and lectures and school placement end in May.
