Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood
Do you want to make a difference to the lives and educational futures of young children? Then follow your passion and explore early education with an internationally-recognised team of academics and researchers in DCU. This course will prepare you for a highly rewarding career, educating and supporting young children during a vital time in their development. The BECE prepares you for work as a professional in a variety of educational and care childhood settings, from preschools and crèches, to special needs schools and family resource projects. Theory and Practice The BECE degree combines theory with practical learning. You’ll learn applied skills through workshops, seminars and independent group study. This could involve working in the Lego room programming ‘Beebots’, or designing play environments for young children, or developing literacy sacks to support them as readers. You’ll also put your knowledge into practice during yearly work placements. BECE graduates are in high demand at home and abroad. In Year 3, you can consider studying abroad on an Erasmus programme, in Norway, Belgium or Hungary.

Bachelor of Arts
At the University of Limerick, we deliver an Arts Degree which is flexible and wide-ranging, offering 16 subjects in all. You can study a combination of subjects (as Single Honours or Joint Honours) from across the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences: from familiar arts subjects such as English, French, German, or History, to newer subjects such as, Digital Culture and Communications or Linguistics with TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). The UL curriculum is unique as it includes cooperative education/work experience and a study abroad placement as compulsory elements of the degree. Students will spend one semester undertaking cooperative education/work experience and one semester studying abroad. Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences
With world-class experts in all nine subjects, UL is at the centre of social science research in Ireland. The Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences is designed to bring students and scholars together, with an advanced curriculum designed to integrate teaching with the latest research. The Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences emphasizes interdisciplinary study, allowing students to combine three disciplines. This is combined with a core in data science, emphasizing issues of data literacy, techniques of data collection and data management, and tools for collecting or harvesting data from virtual spaces. Students will also have an opportunity to undertake individual research in the social sciences, under the supervision of a discipline expert. Students will also be presented with the opportunity to learn in a work environment during their Cooperative Education Placement and study abroad at a partner institution overseas as part of UL’s award-winning Erasmus and Exchange programme. This course will help you to become a skilled and creative teaching professional. Learning to Teach, Teaching to Learn The Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching) will equip you not only with subject knowledge, but also with the leadership and communication skills that teachers need. The course helps you to understand how children learn, and gives you the tools to motivate your students in the classroom. As well as learning how to teach the subjects on the primary school curriculum, your knowledge and understanding of the world will deepen through great interactive lectures. Graduates can teach in all schools across the primary sector. You will take an additional qualification in Religious Studies & Religious Education to prepare you to teach the Follow Me programme, the Religious Education programme in use in primary schools under Church of Ireland, Methodist, Presbyterian and Society of Friends patronage.

BSc in Science and Mathematics Education
If you love science and maths, and would like to share your enthusiasm, interest and knowledge with young people, you’ll thrive on the BSc in Science Education. Science and maths teachers work to develop their pupils’ understanding of the world around them and to educate future generations of scientists, engineers and technologists, not to mention citizens who are scientifically, mathematically and technically literate. You’ll build a strong foundation in key areas of education, mathematics and either physics or chemistry, developing essential mathematical thinking skills, and scientific practices and ways of working throughout the four years. You’ll also study the history, psychology, sociology and philosophy of education, as well as undertaking curriculum studies. Gaining practical real-world experience During the course, you’ll spend at least 24 weeks on placement in post-primary schools and you can also complete a 12-week paid internship in industry as part of the STEM Teacher Internship programme. You’ll develop digital literacy and digital skills so you are ready to teach in remote or blended learning environments as well as face-to-face. Once you’ve completed this Teaching Council-approved course, you’ll be qualified to teach mathematics and either physics or chemistry to Leaving Certificate level. Our graduates are known to be creative, highly skilled and highly motivated, and are much sought after as post-primary teachers. Those who decide teaching is not for them can pursue a career in technical training or scientific communication, for example, given their strong STEM training.
