Electrical and control engineering (E&CE) involves a variety of engineering roles from the day-to-day running of ECG machines and ventilators in hospitals to engineering technologist positions in manufacturing plants and the electrical power industry. They can be responsible for the electricity supply and electronic systems in unusual and exciting work environments such as cruise liners and aircraft. They also develop and install high-security alarm systems, advanced lighting, and automated production equipment. E&CE involves analysing complex electrical and electronic circuits and power systems. In addition, for a careers in the many areas of electrical power, automation, robotics, pharmaceutical and manufacturing industries, you need computing skills, ranging from ECDL to advanced-level programming in control and automation systems. In the first year, you’ll be introduced to a broad range of foundation courses that underpin electrical engineering. At the start of Year 2, you choose to follow either of two streams: 1) Control and Automation Systems (design and programme robotic production lines and other automated systems) or 2) Electrical Energy Systems (techniques used and the equipment required for the efficient generation, transmission and use of electricity). In final year, you complete your studies by engaging in a substantial engineering project in your chosen specialist field.

The first year of this course is a common year and students study the same fundamental modules with elements of hardware, software, and electronic principles. In the following years students have the opportunity to choose to specialise in their chosen discipline of Electronic Engineering or Engineering Software in greater depth. This course is designed to produce professional engineers who can design and optimise complex hardware, software and communications systems, and you will be at the forefront of developing the connected world. You’ll develop the skills you need to work in all aspects of the ICT industry, including software design, information technology, telecommunications, and computer network engineering. You’ll combine expertise in engineering with advanced knowledge of electronic design, computer hardware and software, and be able to apply your skills to designing systems ranging from the embedded microprocessors in modern mobile devices to high-performance computing and Microelectronic device design. You’ll be trained to be creative and inventive, and able to solve difficult problems in areas. You’ll spend many hours in our labs, developing strong technical and design skills. Each of the eight semesters, you’ll take six modules, designed to provide a broad-based technical foundation in electronic or software engineering. In Years 2 & 3, you’ll undertake a major hardware or software project, involving strong interaction between you and your supervisor. In your final year, you’ll work on an open-ended design project that will require research, project management and a creative approach to the solution. You can select elective modules such as software design, network engineering, communications systems or microchip design so as to study what interests you in greater depth.

Are you unsure which engineering niche is right for you? You may need time to figure this out. This Common Entry course offers a mix of electronic, electrical, computer, robotics and mechanical. You can sample core engineering modules in first year so that you can decide which area of engineering you enjoy most before choosing the area you want to pursue in subsequent years. On successful completion of the course, students will have the mathematical and scientific basis to successfully enter the second year of seven different Level 7 discipline-specific courses. Students apply for TU708 Bachelor of Engineering on your CAO application. In first year, you’ll complete core modules in engineering, so you can find out which area of the subject interests you most. Modules include Digital Electronics, Engineering Science, Fundamentals of Calculus, Electrical Science, Electronic Communications and Professional Development for Engineers. At the end of Year 1, you can choose to enter into Year 2 of either Computer Engineering or Mechatronic Engineering (both Level 7 courses).
