Electrical and Electronic Engineering applies scientific knowledge to develop a broad range of technological products and services that underpin modern society. BE Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a four-year professional engineering course designed to prepare students for employment in the electrical and electronic sectors in Ireland and abroad. BE (Hons) Energy Engineering

The first year of the BE is a broad education in engineering fundamentals. At the end of the first year, you can choose to enter Energy Engineering. Your chosen area of specialization in the second year will also offer routes to further branches of engineering at the Masters level. At the end of a successful 3rd year, students enter the 4th year, which is a pathway to either the 5th Year Integrated ME for eligible students or exiting with a BE(Hons). The ME pathway finishes with a Professional Work Placement that takes place during the 2nd semester and the summer break (8 months).

BE (Hons) Process and Chemical Engineering

The first year of the BE is a broad education in engineering fundamentals. At the end of the first year you can choose to enter Process and Chemical Engineering. Your chosen area of specialization in second year will also offer a route to Process and Chemical Engineering at Masters (ME) level. At the end of a successful 3rd year, students enter 4th year, to embark on a pathway to either the 5 year Integrated ME for eligible students or exiting after four years with a BE(Hons). The ME pathway incorporates a Professional Work Placement that takes place during the 2nd semester of Year 4 and during the summer break (8 months). Process and Chemical Engineers are involved in the design, modification and operation of processes to produce products across a broad range of process industries, including bio/pharmaceuticals, food and drinks production, bulk chemicals and fuels/energy. Process and Chemical engineering helps provide a pathway towards meeting societal requirements around health and wellbeing, energy provision, food production, water supply, waste management and consumer goods.

Masters Engineering Qualifier - Electronic & Computer Engineering

Students who do not have the entry requirements to enter directly onto the Masters programmes may be offered entry on the Masters Qualifier Programme. The Master Qualifier contains the same modules as our Masters. Students on the Masters Qualifier Programme may transfer onto the Masters programme, subject to the transfer requirements and without loss of accumulated credits. A Graduate Certificate exit award is potentially available if a transfer to the Masters Programme is not possible or desirable however, a minimum of 4 advanced (Level 9) modules must be successfully completed in order to exit with a Graduate Certificate.

MEng in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

This Masters programme allows the students to specialise in the widely established area of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering or to widen their knowledge from their undergraduate studies. It enables graduates to apply MEng Level 9 learning outcomes using computer–based technology to solve mechanical and manufacturing engineering problems. This programme introduces the use of advanced Computer Aided Engineering tools and, by experiencing these advanced techniques and software, the graduate will gain a vital edge. It allows the candidate to keep up with the rapidly changing manufacturing and design sectors. In addition, students can opt for a specialist Major in one of four areas: Simulation-driven Design, Advanced Manufacturing, Sustainable Systems and Energy, or Biomedical Engineering.

Bachelor and Master of Engineering (Biomedical)

Biomedical Engineering is a relatively new branch of engineering that involves the use of cutting-edge technologies to help improve human healthcare. Biomedical engineers are involved in the design and creation of medical devices, implants such as stents, instruments and materials for clinical use. They also apply their engineering skills to problems in human biology and are at the forefront of developments in human medicine in the 21st century, enabling the medicial profession to diagnose and treat disease, and repair or replace damaged living tissue. This degree programme was developed as a result of the need within the biomedical industry for highly skilled personnel. Locally based biomedical companies, of which there is a significant cluster, were involved in its design. It therefore remains highly relevant to the needs of industry while giving students a full training in engineering design principles and their application to human biology in an interdisciplinary environment. Related, relevant subjects that are covered over the course of the degree programme include biomedical instrumentation, tissue engineering and biomechanics.

Engineering is a wide area, covering such fields as civil, mechanics, electronics and computer technology. This course offers you the option of studying engineering in a general way for a year before going on to specialise in your chosen field in year two. It has been designed to help you make your choice about what professional engineering qualification you wish to study for by giving you a year to study the basic concepts and fundamentals of engineering. Therefore, it will help you to make an informed choice about what you wish to specialise in by enabling you to find out where your aptitude and interests lie. Undenominated Engineering will always stand to students as a foundation course. On successful completion of their first year exams, students will be able to transfer to the second year of one of the programmes within the College of Science and Engineering. Prospective students should note that they will be at no academic disadvantage having chosen first year Undenominated Engineering: they will not have to complete an additional year of study (which is a common misconception about this programme!). If anything, students will be able to make an informed decision about their area of study having completed Undenominated Engineering.
