MA (Environment, Society and Development)

Global issues of development, security and the environment have never been so important. The COVID-19 pandemic, the broader overstepping of ecological boundaries and the threat of climate change have brought questions of neoliberal economic production, environmental sustainability and human security to the fore. If you would you like to acquire the critical thinking and field-based learning skills that are essential in addressing these challenges, then the innovative and award-winning MA in Environment, Society and Development (MA-ESD) is for you. The MA-ESD will engage you on a critical exploration of the various practices of development and security that define our contemporary world, and ultimately how that critique can enable more informed, participatory and transformative interventionary practices. The programme involves engagement with a number of core areas in international development, critical security studies and political ecology, and will expose you to global concerns that encompass a complex and dynamic mesh of environmental, geopolitical and economic processes. On the programme, you will gain enormously from the field experience of working on the ground in an international development context, and as a graduate you will have the ability and ambition to activate a wide range of expert critical knowledges in shaping a more sustainable world.

MA (Health Promotion)—full-time

The MA is an internationally recognised qualification with the course content informed by the agreed competencies and professional standards for Health Promotion in Europe. The programme is an IUHPE (International Union of Health Promotion and Education) Accredited Health Promotion Course. This means that students who graduate from this course are automatically eligible to apply to become an IUHPE Registered Health Promotion Practitioner on the voluntary register. Graduates of the programme work in statutory services (e.g., Health Service Executive), non-governmental organisations (e.g., Irish Heart Foundation, Dental Health Foundation, Irish Cancer Society), and in the academic sector (e.g., University of Galway, Sligo IT, Athlone IT), in a number of roles including dedicated Health Promotion Specialist posts. Past graduates are employed nationally and internationally, in posts in Ireland, UK, Australia, Canada and USA. Some graduates have gone onto further study in our doctoral programme.

This is an exciting multidisciplinary and comparative MA programme that aims to familiarise you with movements, authors, texts and themes of international contemporary literature and film. Incorporating modules from, for example, Journalism, Film Studies, Drama and Performance, you will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of modules that will complement your interest areas and potential career path. The MSc in Mathematics is a flexible one-year programme. The programme is primarily designed for two types of students: Students with a 4-year degree in Mathematics who want to upskill in mathematical areas related to employment e.g. in the communications and data industries or the financial sector. Students with a 3-year joint BA in Mathematics, or with degrees in cognate disciplines (Computing, Science, or Engineering) incorporating a significant mathematical component, who want to upskill in Mathematics before embarking on careers in teaching, academia, or the industry.

This cross-disciplinary programme, unique in Ireland, provides students with a firm foundation in the study of European—including Irish—cultures, languages and societies from the Classical period to the end of the Middle Ages. MA (Philosophy)

The progamme aims to enhance students’ ability to articulate the transformational value of philosophical thought with respect to basic conceptual frameworks and specific ethical, societal and political issues. In doing so, it seeks to develop an understanding of the relevance of philosophical thought in diverse areas of public life. It does all this through critical analysis of key concepts and debates in cutting-edge contemporary Philosophy from both Analytic and European/Continental traditions. Drawing on long traditions of philosophical thought, our modules aim to explore questions of values, forms of reasoning and modes of practice as they play out in personal, societal, and political contexts. The programme combines historical perspectives and contemporary critical debates to provide analytic and argumentative skills that are transferable into diverse areas of employment as well as being advantageous for further study in philosophy. A notable feature of the programme is that students are given the opportunity to organise a peer-reviewed international graduate conference. Within the Philosophy of Children component, students may have placement experience in Irish schools.

The rural represents a key sphere in any discussion on sustainable development. Much is known about major trends that have impacted and that continue to impact on rurality, and significant research exists on the nature of such impacts. Futures planning is particularly critical for effective policy-making in that it seeks to support existing planning and decision-making by providing decision-making frameworks to solve problems based on reasonable assumptions about the future, and by offering alternatives and their potential impacts. The programme also considers how innovation in a development sense is broadly linked to improvements—in methods, processes, products, services or technologies—and how it can be about promoting a culture of innovation that supports and nurtures new ideas.

Arts (Children's Studies)

This programme provides unique and applied training that is not available anywhere else in Europe. The Arts (Children’s Studies) programme provides students with the knowledge, confidence and transferable skills to identify their preferred career path. Students on this programme are expected to work with children from the very first semester and throughout the four years, including a semester-long placement, thus mixing the academic experience with practical work. Graduates will be well-placed to pursue careers in community development work, as integration support assistants (special needs assistants), and research, as well as to gain entry to postgraduate degrees in primary teaching, play therapy, social work, speech and language therapy, health promotion, arts administration, and public advocacy.

The Bachelor of Arts with Human Rights is an exciting, four year interdisciplinary degree programme offered by the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies in conjunction with the Irish Centre for Human Rights. The programme is unique in several respects, chiefly because it is the only undergraduate programme of its kind in the Republic of Ireland that allows undergraduates to specialise in a field that was previously reserved to postgraduate study. During the course, students engage with human rights discourse through class-based teaching at the Irish Centre for Human Rights, which is one of one of the world's premier academic human rights institutions, dedicated to the study and promotion of human rights, international criminal law and international humanitarian law.
