Bachelor of Arts in Applied Languages

This programme aims to produce graduates with a high level of competence in at least two languages combined with a specialist knowledge of the societies in which those languages are spoken. The course also offers the unusual opportunity to take three languages to degree level. Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice

Become an expert in Criminal Justice. The BA (Criminal Justice) is administered by the School of Law which boasts considerable expertise in the criminal justice area. The Centre for Crime, Justice and Victim Studies was established at the School of Law in 1997 and is a national centre of excellence for criminal justice research. Students of criminal justice in the University of Limerick will thus be taught by experts in the area who have published widely both nationally and internationally on criminal justice topics. The expertise of these staff is complemented by the first class credentials of the teaching faculty from the other disciplines (i.e. Sociology, Politics, Public Administration, Psychology and Management) which contribute to the programme.

Bachelor of Arts in European Studies

European Studies in the University of Limerick is a broad and integrated world-class programme. It allows students an in-depth opportunity to study European languages and policy and equips them with highly sought-after digital and research skills. It is also the only European Studies programme in Ireland which includes Irish as one of its language options. Brexit means more direct interaction with the EU and with individual member states on the continent. A better knowledge of the European Union, and Ireland’s place within it, is more needed than ever before. An understanding of Europe requires knowledge of its historical origins, of its economic, legal and societal aspects, and of its political institutions. The BA in European Studies develops knowledge and understanding of all of these areas linking them with knowledge of the cultures and languages of key member states. BSc in Science and Mathematics Education

If you love science and maths, and would like to share your enthusiasm, interest and knowledge with young people, you’ll thrive on the BSc in Science Education. Science and maths teachers work to develop their pupils’ understanding of the world around them and to educate future generations of scientists, engineers and technologists, not to mention citizens who are scientifically, mathematically and technically literate. You’ll build a strong foundation in key areas of education, mathematics and either physics or chemistry, developing essential mathematical thinking skills, and scientific practices and ways of working throughout the four years. You’ll also study the history, psychology, sociology and philosophy of education, as well as undertaking curriculum studies. Gaining practical real-world experience During the course, you’ll spend at least 24 weeks on placement in post-primary schools and you can also complete a 12-week paid internship in industry as part of the STEM Teacher Internship programme. You’ll develop digital literacy and digital skills so you are ready to teach in remote or blended learning environments as well as face-to-face. Once you’ve completed this Teaching Council-approved course, you’ll be qualified to teach mathematics and either physics or chemistry to Leaving Certificate level. Our graduates are known to be creative, highly skilled and highly motivated, and are much sought after as post-primary teachers. Those who decide teaching is not for them can pursue a career in technical training or scientific communication, for example, given their strong STEM training.

MA Geography: Cities, Space and Culture

This is a new one-year taught Masters degree starting in September 2015 on both a full-time and part-time basis at University College Cork. The aim is to provide a broad academic and professional training in urban, social and cultural geography. MA Human Osteoarchaelogy

This course is designed to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of and practical training in human osteoarchaeology: the analysis of human skeletal remains from archaeological contexts. Teaching focuses on the explanation of theoretical approaches and methods that can be used to address archaeological research questions using human skeletal data. Teaching consists of both lectures and lab-based practical sessions. You will benefit from the fact that the Department of Archaeology has a long tradition of research and teaching in human osteoarchaeology and will have the opportunity to engage in discussions with PhD students and staff, both in the classroom and outside. You will have an active role in shaping your own research project. The taught MA in Human Osteoarchaeology is a one-year, full-time, vocationally- orientated course. This provides both a basis for application in the workplace and an opportunity for you to continue into PhD research.

MA English (Modernities: Literature, Theory and Culture from Romantics to the Present)

This MA introduces students to the advanced study of American and British literature and other cultural forms, from the eighteenth century to the present day, as well as to a selection of European and American theoretical works pertaining to the concept of ‘modernity’.
