Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Media Production and Digital Arts

Are you interested in working in the dynamic and fast-paced media world? Do you want to tell stories across a multitude of different platforms including short dramas, animations, radio documentaries, photography, and many more? This four-year course (formerly Creative Digital Media) will help you develop the necessary skills to do exactly this. Working in a studio-based environment, our hands-on production modules and specialist workshops focus on digital content creation and will have you thinking, designing and creating right from the start. This degree is designed to be fluid, responding to both your interests and the ever-changing industry landscape. With a complementary suite of practical and theoretical modules, all aspects of the course inform and are informed by each other. As you develop your understanding of the technologies and their storytelling potential, you choose which paths to follow in your final two years. Project work includes filmmaking, music videos, 2D and 3D animations, motion design, graphic design and photographic portfolios. Our course will also introduce you to emerging media practices such as interactive video, augmented and virtual reality, and creative coding so you’ll get the skillset needed to work with the latest media and storytelling technologies. You’ll also be studying the role of the media in society, keeping an eye on 21st century social and technological trends.

Bachelor of Music (Honours) in Music

There’s worldwide demand for the talents of Irish-trained musicians – both classical and traditional vocalists and musicians. This full-time degree course will prepare you for a career as an instrumental or vocal performer, teacher, composer or musicologist. The course places a major emphasis on performance, combined with supporting academic study. Areas studied include composition techniques; history of music; aural training; an introduction to education studies; music technology, and supporting musicianship. In Years 3 and 4, you can concentrate on one of the following: Performance, Composition, Pedagogy, Irish Traditional Music, or Musicology. You will have opportunities to showcase your talents by participating in a diverse programme of concerts, recitals and stage performances. A core element in the course is participation in ensembles, including: Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Choral Society, Chamber Choir, Opera Ensemble, Irish Traditional Music Ensemble, Big Band and Early Music Ensemble.

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Photography

The arrival of affordable digital cameras has stimulated widespread interest in photography, presenting the professional photographer with both new opportunities and challenges. This course will prepare you for a career in professional photographic media practice, as well as the broader visual arts sector. It will equip you with key skills, while encouraging you to reflect on your actions and practices. There are three main strands: Critical Studies (Visual Studies, History, Theory and Criticism); Photographic Practice, and Professional Studies (Study Skills, Law, and Business). The Critical Studies will develop your understanding of the context of media and visual arts production, while fostering intellectual enquiry into the nature of society and culture. The practice modules are underpinned by theoretical study of photographic technologies and images in the social and institutional context in which the photographer operates. The wide variety of career opportunities include commercial and industrial photography (ranging from medical to fashion), photography as visual arts practice, multimedia, print and electronic media, photojournalism and editorial work. Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Social Care

Social care workers provide professional individual or group care to clients with personal and social needs, in a caring, compassionate, non-judgmental way. Client groups include children and adolescents in residential care; young people in detention schools; people with intellectual or physical disabilities; people who are homeless; people with alcohol/drug dependency; families in the community, older people, and asylum-seekers/refugees. Social care work is based on interpersonal relationships. It requires empathy, strong communication skills, self-awareness and an ability to use critical reflection. Teamwork and interdisciplinary work are also important. This course will familiarise you with the latest concepts and theoretical developments in the relevant academic disciplines, and help you to develop as a self-aware, reflective, altruistic, empathic social care professional. You’ll develop skills relevant to social care practice and benefit from supervised exposure to social care practice, using three practice placements. These will help you to make an informed choice as to which area of practice you are best suited. Subjects studied include social care work with older people and people with disabilities, social policy and social justice, psychology and human development, professional practice, law in social care work, safeguarding children and vulnerable adults, working with communities, social policy-making and social psychology. TU996 is a full-time course and students are required to attend lectures, in person, 5 days per week.

Are you a sports enthusiast interested in developing a career in the fitness industry in a coaching or business role, or a business enthusiast who’s passionate about the world of sport business and coaching? If you're fit and active with good people skills and an interest in sport and business, this is the course for you. You’ll learn all the skills of sports management and coaching techniques, combined with the fundamentals of business and enterprise. This comprehensive course covers all aspects of sport and sport science plus finance, marketing, management, IT and event management. This enables graduates to work effectively in sports management and coaching environments. We have a fourth-generation artificial playing surface, a fully equipped gym, large sports hall, a video performance analysis laboratory and a high-performance training coaching space. In Year 4, modules include Applied Performance Analysis, Elite Coaching, Sports and Leisure Event Management, and High-Performance Speed and Conditioning, and you can specialise in areas such as Personal Training, Strategic Planning and Sport Management and Coaching. Note: Sports Management and Coaching students provide coaching and fitness support as personal trainers to the staff and sports scholarship athletes of the university, as well as coaching support to primary schools in the local area.
