M&D engineers have the vital task of solving society’s innovation and production tasks. They’re involved in the design products and the efficient management of resources and technology to produce quality goods and services for society. One of their key roles is developing more innovative products, resulting in a high value-added manufacturing sector. Their skills and knowledge can be applied across a broad spectrum of the engineering sector. In this course, you’ll acquire the right mix of technical, managerial and communication skills that will equip you for a wide range of careers in a broad spectrum of industries. You’ll learn about the structure and operation of a manufacturing enterprise and the planning and simulation tools needed to help make cost-effective decisions. You’ll acquire team-working and innovation and entrepreneurial skills. The course also aims to produce environmentally responsible engineers, who will conduct manufacturing activities with due regard to the environment and regulatory and legal requirements. You undertake a major project over the two final semesters. As part of this project, you have the opportunity to become involved in the student competition to design and build a race car and compete against other universities in Silverstone UK.

Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest, most broad-ranging and versatile engineering disciplines, covering all industry and many research sectors, including Power Generation, Aerospace, Engine Design, Pharmaceutical Processing, Biomedical Device Design, Renewable Energy Design, Transportation, and many more. It’s all about using science, maths and technology to find better ways of making mechanical and electro-mechanical things work, such as designing electric vehicles to reduce pollution, designing enabling devices for people with a disability or improving the design of a wind turbine. This course will give you the knowledge and competencies that you can apply in many fields of industry and research, including an excellent foundation in engineering science and maths, advanced design theory and practice, high-quality project work and practical workshop/laboratory hands-on skills. On graduation, you will be able to identify and define a mechanical engineering challenge, formulate and analyse effective and sustainable solutions, and implement the best solution; design mechanical and mechanical-related systems, components and processes; and conduct advanced mechanical engineering research, involving the analysis and interpretation of research data, to attain useful empirical and scientific engineering knowledge. Students choosing the Level 8 General Engineering course in Tallaght Campus will have the option in Year 1 to choose between Mechanical, Biomedical and Automation Engineering. They are still the same well known and highly commended courses offered in previous years at TU Dublin Tallaght, only this year we combined the first few modules to give students more time to choose their specialisation. Engineers are in extremely high demand right now in Ireland and globally with exponential growth in job opportunities, especially in the Mechanical, Automation and Biomedical sector. With such rapid advances in technologies in the healthcare and medical devices sector, robotics, pharmaceutical, automotive, food and beverage industries, graduates of these three courses will be at the forefront of new technologies to help improve our quality of life through new innovative designs. This level 8 course takes 4 years to complete and we ensure that additional tutorials are available for any students who may require additional academic support. The three Engineering disciplines pride themselves on graduating students who are industry-ready after 4 years. Students experience innovative teaching in modern laboratories and lectures. The mix in this course of electronic, electrical, computer, robotics and mechanical will offer you lots of opportunities to thrive. Graduates can pursue careers in many fields, from pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and heavy industry to electronics and automation. You’ll study a wide range of subjects, from Algebra and Geometry, Engineering and Electrical Science, Mechanics and Computer-Aided Design to Instrumentation, Design Methodology, Automation and Computer Networks. Sustainable Energy Engineering involves applying the principles of energy conversion and use. The course investigates renewable energy sources, such as wind energy, solar energy and other heat sources. You’ll learn about the design and operation of wind turbines, solar energy panels and other equipment associated with alternative energy. Governments are trying to balance economic growth with protecting the environment. This course is a direct response to the need to produce innovative graduates with qualifications in the energy field in particular. The first two years of the course will introduce you to the fundamental areas of engineering. Modules in mechanical and electrical engineering are included along with specialist energy and traditional energy sources. In Year 3, you’ll specialise further in transport, efficient energy use and energy design. In your final year, you’ll focus more on smart technologies, simulation and project work. BEng in Mechatronic Engineering
Want to build the robots of the future? If you’re fascinated by robotics and automation, this is the course to do. This course all about how we build intelligent machines through the meeting of mechanical systems such as engines and machines with the electronics needed to control them. This course perfectly blends mechanical engineering and electronic engineering. It offers classes in 3D modelling and design, for example, as well as circuit design and programming. Our students and staff are intrigued and inspired by the interplay between electronics and moving parts in connected devices and state-of-the-art machinery. Gain knowledge for the real world In third year, you’ll get to do a six-month INTRA work placement and throughout the course, you’ll do lots of project-based learning where you use the latest real-world tools and technologies to solve problems and, of course, build robots. That’s not all. You’ll also take some business-based modules, so you can learn how to develop a business plan and work with other parts of an enterprise. While you can go on from this course to work in either mechanical or electrical engineering, our graduates typically end up in roles where they incorporate one into the other. For example, they might put sensors into a machine to measure aspects of how it’s working or develop control systems for a lift or a car. Either way, mechatronics graduates are in huge demand.
