Specialised and industrially relevant modules in medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical processes and/or the regulatory environment of the pharmachem sector are delivered at all stages. The course is designed so that you’ll develop the skills and competencies required of a chemical analyst at all stages. On graduation, you’ll be qualified to avail of opportunities in the pharmaceutical, chemical, computer and food & beverage industries, state laboratories, environmental testing laboratories, and hospital labs and universities. Or you can progress to ordinary and honours degree courses in TU Dublin.

Bachelor of Science in Ophthalmic Dispensing
Dispensing Opticians are eye care professionals who are trained to interpret prescriptions issued by optometrists or ophthalmologists and to dispense spectacles and other optical aids. They advise patients on the most appropriate spectacle frames, lenses or other optical aids based on their individual needs taking into account the prescription, occupation and lifestyle of the patient. They are trained to take the measurements required for the fitting of such optical appliances. Dispensing Opticians also check spectacles and other appliances to ensure they match the patient’s specification and meet the required standards. They advise patients on how to get the best from their eyewear and play an important role in aftercare and the maintenance of such appliances. Dispensing opticians play a vital role in providing the best low vision aid for partially sighted patients and the best fitting frame and lens design for children. They are also trained to advise on sports and protective eyewear. Subsequent to further qualification, they may fit contact lenses. Dispensing opticians are often involved in optical practice management. A career as a dispensing optician is extremely rewarding. It offers great variety and will deliver a high degree of job satisfaction to those attracted to a career in an allied healthcare setting, who have an interest in maths and science, relish problem solving and enjoy interacting with the public. All Optometry and Ophthalmic Dispensing undergraduates are required to insert drops, contact lenses and probes (with ocular anaesthetic) into fellow students’ eyes and allow fellow students to insert the same into their eyes during the course of their course. All procedures will be carried out in a safe, clean, clinical environment under the supervision of an optometry faculty member.

Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Science
If you’re interested in the discovery and development of new drugs and therapies, this course may be right for you. It covers the full process of development, as well as technical, regulatory and management aspects. Pharmaceutical science combines a broad range of biology and chemistry disciplines that are critical to the discovery and development of new drugs and therapies. This course covers the development from discovery through to the formulation of medicines, and highlights the importance of the regulatory requirements to get a new drug on the market. Over the three years, you’ll be introduced to the technical, regulatory and management aspects of pharmaceutical development and manufacturing. In Year 1, you’ll gain fundamental knowledge in chemistry and biology. In Years 2 and 3, you’re introduced to pharmaceutical-focused modules. In third year, you can do a 6-8 month placement in one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Ireland or complete an Erasmus research-focused placement in a European university. Placement gives you a considerable advantage when seeking employment. The course is taught by lecturers from both academic and pharmaceutical industry backgrounds and aims to provide students with industry-relevant experience so as to enhance their career prospects.

This course covers a broad range of disciplines, focusing on the medical aspects of physical activity, and the general concepts of physiology, medical science, nutrition, health, and related training. You’ll gain a thorough understanding of the identification, treatment and prevention of injuries that happen during everyday life, illness, physical activity, athletic training, and sporting events. The modules cover injury prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management, and also how illness and disease affect health, well-being and physical performance. Graduates can find work in both clinical and academic settings, with career opportunities in fitness instruction, scientific research and health-related areas. You can opt to do a vocational skills module on a portfolio basis by the end of Year 3. Five academic credits are awarded for this module.
