After completing the Higher Diploma Mathematical Studies you will achieve a level of competence equivalent to that of a Mathematics major in a three-year honours degree. The programme covers the mathematics necessary to qualify the student to teach mathematics to Leaving Certificate level when combined with a Professional Master of Education (PME).

This programme is aimed at graduates whose level of statistical or mathematical training is high and have demonstrated numerical ability, but below that of a BSc Degree in Statistics. Students who are awarded a distinction or upper second-class honours in the Higher Diploma in Statistics are qualified to enter the MSc Statistics. On successful completion of the programme, you will reach in one year a level of statistical knowledge equivalent to that of BSc Honours graduates. You will be able to apply basic statistical reasoning, techniques and models in the analysis of real data, understand the context in which statistical work is done, select appropriate statistical models for different applications, interpret results, and demonstrate programming skills, report writing skills and presentation skills.

Data analytics/science is the science of extracting insight from large amounts of raw data in order to enable better understanding of the processes that created it and so help in analysis, theory exploration and decision making. These techniques can be applied in the natural science, social science and business domains. The Higher Diploma in Data Analytics is a new, purpose designed course which has been carefully designed to address industry needs. The course is a collaboration between the Departments of Mathematics & Statistics, Computer Science and the National Centre for Geocomputation. The modules are designed to give students the knowledge and skills to collect, process, analyse and visualise data in order to extract useful information, explore statistical patterns, test hypotheses, and explore the implications of models.

The aim of this course is to enable graduates having some mathematical background attain the level required to teach the subject in schools. On completion, students should attain a level of mastery comparable to that of Joint-Honours graduates in Mathematical Studies.

Those holding the Higher Diploma are deemed to have reached the honours degree standard in Mathematics. The Diploma is awarded at pass and honours levels.

Those holding the Higher Diploma are deemed to have reached the honours degree standard in Statistics; it is awarded at pass and honours levels. Those holding the Diploma with a First Class Honours or with Second Class Honours Grade 1 are deemed ready for higher postgraduate research work in Statistics or related fields.

The MSc in Data Science and Analytics is a 12-month conversion course (new in 2017) designed to give students the knowledge and skills to collect, process analyse and visualise data in order to extract useful information, explore patterns and evaluate models. The course is a collaboration between the Departments of Mathematics & Statistics, Computer Science and the National Centre for Geocomputation.

This course is intended to introduce graduates in mathematics to current ideas and methods at the forefront of modern mathematical research. The topics vary from year to year but include modules in analysis, algebra and geometry.

This is a one year full-time or two or more years part-time taught course. It is aimed at those who have a primary degree in a related subject who wish to convert this to a degree in theoretical or mathematical physics. Those holding the Higher Diploma are deemed to have reached the honours degree standard in Mathematical (Theoretical) Physics.

Master of Science in Mathematical Science Students take modules in Theoretical Physics and Mathematics, including a 20 ECTS research project in Theoretical Physics. At least 45 ECTS, including the research project, must be taken at the Masters level (level 6 in Theoretical Physics and level 5 in Mathematics). The remaining credits may be made up at levels 4, 5 or 6.

Applied Mathematics is the application of mathematics to the modelling and solving of practical, real-world problems. The emphasis throughout this three-year course is on developing and enhancing problem-solving skills. Areas of applied mathematics taught on the course include: aspects of more classical applied mathematics in the form of elements of mechanics mathematical modelling methods and techniques computer programming language and use of modern sophisticated symbolic software numerical experimentation general mathematical methods elements of the modern areas of chaos and dynamical systems.

This course in the theory and practice of mathematics is specially designed for students in the CACSSS who want to further develop their interest in mathematics. It can also provide a route into teaching mathematics at second-level. The BA in Mathematical Studies is an option in the BA Arts (Honours) degree and complements other numerically based options in the BA Arts degree, for example Economics or Geography. You will develop the theoretical underpinning of the mathematics you studied at school, while also developing applications of Mathematics to problems in the wider world. Throughout the degree you will learn written and oral presentation skills, for example, how to present a logic argument, perhaps backed up by numerical data.

You will study with the Maynooth University Department of Education who are committed to reflecting on and interrogating the purposes, principles and values underpinning educational policy, practice and theory. You will take a five year route to second-level teaching instead of a six-year route. Why choose this degree? As an undergraduate, you will study a four-year Science degree, while also completing 60 credits in Education. After four years you are awarded a BSc Mathematics and Computer Science (with Education) degree – a level 8 honours degree. You now have two pathways open to you: You can choose to exit your studies with your level 8 qualification and take a different path in your education or career. You can continue with your studies to become a fully qualified teacher. This means you complete one further year of study at postgraduate level - required in order to meet the Teaching Council requirements to be registered as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) in two subjects. Having graduated with your Level 8 BSc Mathematics and Computer Science (with Education) degree, you are guaranteed your place in this postgraduate year. At the end of year five of your studies, you will be a fully qualified second-level computer science and mathematics teacher up to Leaving Certificate level. Through this pathway you are fully qualified after five years rather than taking the six year route (details of the six-year route are outlined in the next bullet point above). For those students who may not achieve the points necessary to secure a place on MH212, an alternative, six-year route to second-level teaching is available. You can take the BSc Bachelor of Science (MH201) degree for four years and then apply for the Level 9 Professional Master of Education degree. The PME is a two-year, full-time programme designed to qualify graduates to teach at second level. Entry to the PME is competitive and is not guaranteed to graduates of the BSc Bachelor of Science degree.
