Speech and language therapists enable people with communication disorders and swallowing disorders to achieve their maximum potential. They are involved in assessing clients’ communication and swallowing difficulties, and developing treatment programmes to meet their specific needs. They work closely with other members of the team, such as nurses, doctors, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, teachers, etc, and work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, primary care health centres and schools.The Bachelor of Science Speech and Language Therapy programme is accredited by both the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists (IASLT) (professional body) and CORU (regulatory body). Our mission statement is: “To prepare speech and language therapists in training to become competent clinicians and independent lifelong learners, by providing a supportive learning environment to explore relevant theory and apply it to clinical practice, with an emphasis on lived experiences and evidence.” Our curriculum is spiral in nature which means that we revisit topics and themes throughout the programme to deepen students’ knowledge and skills. There is a clear, transparent, pathway to facilitate the development of competencies across the four years. Students must undertake clinical placements, under the supervision of qualified speech and language therapists, in a range of settings to develop clinical competencies. We also have a purpose-built speech and language therapy on-site clinic on campus. This clinic is a unique collaboration between University of Galway, the health services, and Voices for Down syndrome Galway. Students undertake some of their clinical placements in this facility. The on-site clinic has the dual function of delivering high quality services to the public while at the same time providing a supportive learning environment for SLTs in training.We use innovative and creative teaching, learning, and assessment methods to facilitate students to link theory with practice The curriculum is delivered by a dynamic reflective team that is committed to excellence.

This master's programme will provide students with an in-depth understanding of the technology used in modern astronomical observatories through taught courses and a research project. The aim of this programme is to train graduates with backgrounds in the molecular life sciences in genomics relevant to medical applications. With continuing advances in the technologies that are used to sequence DNA, medical applications of genomics are becoming increasingly important. It is now possible to diagnose rare genetic diseases from genomic sequences, while sequencing of tumours has become an important means of refining therapeutic choices in cancer treatment. The aim of this course is to teach people how identify commercial needs, respond to the need in the form of a high level solution, test the viability of that solution, develop a commercial repose and create a company or a new business unit within an existing company, with a particular focus on innovation-driven enterprises that can scale up. We have chosen the successful "Disciplined Entrepreneurship" 24-step process from MIT as the basis for our approach. The course will include working through issues of market analysis, technology viability assessment, competitive positioning, team building, product lifecycle planning, marketing strategy, sales channel analysis, and with a strong emphasis on the entrepreneur/intrapreneur as a salesperson. Business plans will be developed based on the 24 steps, and will include an executive summary, vision and values, market analysis/segmentation and competition, a product and manufacturing plan, a sales plan, a financial plan, and a marketing plan.

Toxicology is the study of poisons, drawing heavily on life and physical sciences, as well as being an applied practically-based subject. It is designed to acquaint students with the breadth of Toxicology, with a considerable emphasis on its practical application. The first semester consists of a foundation in Pharmacology and Toxicology and their applications. Workshops provide students with a theoretical basis in data handling and interpretation. The second semester consists of lectures in advanced topics such as Risk Assessment, Target Organ Toxicity, Reproductive and Regulatory Toxicology. In addition there is more emphasis on laboratory mini-projects (in vivo, in vitro & molecular projects) that introduce students to the practical elements of toxicity testing and data interpretation. There are also a number of written projects on toxicity testing used in the drug industry as well as recent advances in toxicity assays which involve self-directed learning.

The aim of this M.Sc. course is to allow participants further their career progression in musculoskeletal and sports and exercise medicine by enhancing basic background knowledge in anatomy, exercise physiology, sports and exercise science; and, in addition develop high quality practical and critical thinking skills in musculoskeletal assessment, rehabilitation, exercise testing and training prescription in health and disease.
