That’s exactly what many of our Sports Science and Health graduates do, while many others make a massive impact in the community, helping people of all ages to enjoy and benefit from sport and exercise. During this course, you’ll learn how to enhance health and human performance, and how to advocate for and champion a healthy, educated and active society. You’ll encounter a range of teaching methods, including practical sessions, and develop key skills you can use in any career, including creative and critical thinking. Understand the possibilities You’ll study anatomy, behaviour change, coaching, nutrition, physiology, psychology, sociology and more, understanding these topics as they apply to people of all ages and in contexts from general health through to elite sport performance. To gain on-the-ground experience, you’ll do a six-month INTRA programme work placement in third year. As a Sport Science and Health graduate, you could go on to work as a performance analyst, performance coach, laboratory technician or health promotion officer. In third year, you’ll do an INTRA placement in a clinical, corporate or other environment. Biological Sciences General Entry
If you’re endlessly fascinated by how living things function and keen to make a contribution to humanity, biological sciences will appeal to you. By choosing this general entry course, you can discover more about molecules, cells and life, develop your scientific skills and discover different specialist study and career paths. Astronomy is the oldest of the sciences, but you’ll discover how it’s evolving incredibly quickly in the 21st century, with more and more sensitive instruments yielding more and better data. By the time you graduate, you’ll know the latest techniques used to observe the sky at different energies, and why multi-wavelength observations are crucial to understanding the true nature of cosmic sources. You’ll learn through lectures and by doing lab work, where you’ll get to explore the nature of sources using real X-ray data collected by the XMM-Newton observatory. Broad-based skills and real-world experience Along with studying physics and mathematics, you’ll gain basic programming skills and significant practice in data analysis. Common Entry into Actuarial and Financial Mathematics
Want to use your love of and talent for mathematics to set yourself apart on the job market? If you’d like to qualify for in-demand quantitative roles in the insurance and financial industry, the Common Entry into Actuarial and Financial Mathematics programme (CAFM) might be for you. It’s especially ideal if you’d like the flexibility to explore different areas of maths before choosing how you’ll specialise. After this two-year course, you choose whether to spend the next two years studying to get a degree in Actuarial Mathematics (ACM) or in Financial Mathematics (FIM). The modules taken in CAFM are the same as in years 1 and 2 of its twin programme Actuarial Mathematics (ACM), to which you can apply directly through the CAO. Therefore, CAFM offers an alternative route into ACM. Entry into FIM, on the other hand, is guaranteed and exclusive through CAFM. Deep theory and expert skills You’ll learn the fundamental mathematical principles that underpin the state-of-the-art actuarial and financial models you’ll study in later years, along with computer programming, data analysis, economics and accounting. You’ll also gain highly valuable general analytic skills, allowing you to understand and analyse matters in a systematic way, making you an ideal problem-solver. You’ll not only learn about different potential career paths, but you’ll also get to focus many projects and other programme activities on your own health interests. As a Health and Society student, you’ll participate in a voluntary community project in your first year, then go on to design and implement a health equity campaign in second year. In your final year, you’ll complete a health research project and write your final dissertation. Once you’ve completed the programme, you could go on to work in a state or voluntary health or social agency, or go to work in overseas development. Many of our graduates apply to go directly into further study, such as a postgraduate programme in occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, health promotion, social research and a wide range of other areas.

MHSc (Obesity [Nursing])
This masters programme for nurses provides a broad and comprehensive curriculum that is clinically relevant and that also has a strong theoretical basis. It has been developed in parallel with the MSc in Obesity, but has been adapted to meet the needs of nurses seeking to specialise in obesity care and is delivered through the School of Nursing at University of Galway. Obesity is a major health problem, both for affected individuals and for society. There is a growing awareness of the need to provide effective treatments and prevention strategies. Our motivation in developing this programme at University of Galway is two-fold: To inform better, evidence-based, compassionate and dignified nursing care to patients affected by obesity and related disorders and secondly to inform better population level strategies to mitigate the obesity epidemic. This “two-pronged” approach is a strong theme throughout the programme, reflected in the two distinct obesity modules that form part of the core learning. Our students will develop in-depth knowledge of the various therapeutic strategies available to patients and will understand the factors underlying variations in the obesity phenotype. Students will also appreciate the potential benefits and disadvantages of various population level strategies that can be formulated to address the obesity crisis, and the societal, political and legislative challenges faced in deploying these.
