The programme aims to provide students with advanced critical, analytical and research skills in selected substantive areas of social policy, and in the shaping of policy, in contemporary Ireland and more widely. In particular the emphasis is on the interconnections between the themes of rights, recognition and redistribution. This taught Master of Education programme is designed for those interested in the field of educational studies. Its flexible modular design offers the opportunity of completing a Master of Education Degree full-time, in one year, or part-time, over two or more years. It is a 90 credit degree with each module counting for 10 credits. In their final year students choose to complete either a thesis (thirty credits) or a capstone project (twenty credits). Modules are taught on weekday evenings. Some are offered as Easter and Summer School choices. Students can choose a specialism option or a general option. The specialisms on offer are Educational Leadership, Teacher Education, Early Childhood Teaching and Learning, and Social Justice Education. Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership and some other postgraduate courses are eligible for module exemptions. This is a one-year full-time taught postgraduate diploma (Aug ? June) which is designed to prepare qualified second-level teachers to provide and lead a school guidance counselling service. The programme is recognised by the Irish Department of Education (DES) and the Institute of Guidance Counsellors (IGC) as a professional, international qualification in Guidance Counselling. Participants attend Maynooth University one full day per week (Friday) and engage in school placement one day per week (Monday-Thursday) in a school other than where they work. The programme begins in late-August with full-day induction and workshops (attendance is mandatory). Intensive training in Psychometric Testing is scheduled for the October mid-term break (dates to be confirmed) and there will be 2/3 Saturday workshops in Semester 1 Programme participants are responsible for arranging the school placement component of the course (within a 160 km travel distance of Maynooth) during which they work in close co-operation with the School Guidance Counsellor.

The Professional Master of Education (PME) programme is designed to prepare high quality teachers for today’s second level schools. Students undertake a study of the principles of teaching and learning, develop practical teaching skills as well as the foundation disciplines of educational theory. They engage in a supervised teaching placement in at least two second-level schools. Students take modules in teaching methodologies for (usually) two curricular subjects. The course commences in late August and lectures and school placement end in May.

The Higher Diploma in English is a programme designed for applicants who already hold a BA or comparable degree, and who wish to add English to their list of qualifications. It is particularly useful for applicants who may already be teachers, or who wish to qualify as teachers in the future, and who would like to have the background to teach English to Leaving Certificate level. The programme may also be of interest to applicants who already hold an undergraduate qualification in another subject, and simply want to study English out of interest in the subject. Modules range from courses on Shakespeare, the Victorian Novel, to Modernism, Postmodernism, and Irish and World Literatures.

The MA in Creative Writing combines workshops and seminars with one-on-one mentoring of writing projects. Students may take optional modules in literature or other creative modules from across the Faculty, such as Writing for Screen Media. Assessment is through shorter pieces of writing, such as craft essays and reflective journals, and a longer project. The MA, taught by award-winning, internationally-renowned writers, will focus on guiding each student to further develop their voice as a writer, as well as to enrich their existing interests as a writer with new perspectives and a grasp of stylistic approaches. Tactics for editing and revision will be taught in tandem with generative exercises and practices aimed at deepening each student?s relationship to their creative process. Students will have the opportunity to build and develop networks which will sustain their writing practice beyond the MA degree.

We live in a moment where the key discourses which have dominated our understanding of the world ? of politics, economics and culture at large ? suddenly seem inadequate to the task of engaging with an allegedly ?post-truth? environment. New discourses are struggling to emerge; some old ones appear once again to be urgently relevant. The political challenges now confronting us are urgent and manifold, and demand serious critical thinking. These include: inequality, migration, climate change, neo-imperialism, neo-nationalism and isolationism, the exploitations and depredations of global capitalism and resurgent misogyny and racism. The MA in English: Literatures of Engagement addresses this sense of crisis by recognising the significant role that literature ? and the critical discourses associated with the study of literature ? have in both reproducing and analysing cultural values and ideologies, but also in articulating responses and resistance to those. The programme is underpinned by a conviction that any critique of contemporary culture must be rooted in an informed understanding of historical currents shaping the present.
